CAN, CANNOT (CAN’T), COULD, COULD NOT (COULD’NT), MAY, MAYNOT, SHOULD, SHOULD NOT (SHOULDN’T) MUST, MUST NOT (MUSTN’T) HAVE TO, DON’T HAVE TO, DOESN’T HAVE TO, NEED NOT, MIGHT, MIGHT NOT are some that are called Modals and we use these modals in our daily life. They tell us about the way a person thinks – it could be in the positive way or the negative way, using these we can talk about an event or information or the ability of a person or thing and can also be used for seeking requests or permissions as follows:-

 

CAN 1 Can is used to speak about a person’s or a thing’s ability to do something.
e.g.   I can speak English (now- in the present tense)

He can drive a bus

It can calculate fast

I can tackle the problem

You can do it.

  2 Can is used to tell that it is possible.
e.g.   We can complete the project work in 10 days

I can give it a try

She can pass the exam

I can come in the morning

  3 Can + You is used to tell something politely or request for something.
e.g.   Can you collect the receipt tomorrow?

CANNOT (Can’t) 1 Cannot (can’t) is used to speak about a person or thing’s inability to do something
e.g.   I can’t speak Malayalam

  2 Cannot (can’t) is used to tell that it is not possible.
e.g.   We can’t wait till tomorrow

  3 Cannot + You is used to make a request using a gentle pressure
